PLAY: My first GPT… the GOLEMS game

It’s always good to play around with technology before you raise the stakes. In this case, I wanted to try a basic text-based game to see what I could make with just a few paragraphs of interaction with ChatGPT. I had tried this as a conversation prior to the creations of standalone GPTS, so it wasn’t too hard to share that prior chat to get started quickly.

I think there is a lot of potential in this feature, which basically creates no-code software. The interface allows you to split the building prompts from the use of the automation/software. It reminds me of using SQUEAK, which would let you get behind the interface at any time and modify the SmallTalk of your computing environment, but again, here there is no-programming required.

This type of format may be unfamiliar to you if you didn’t grow up with text-based adventures on your Commodore 64 or Atari 800. At least you don’t have to wait for the cassette drive to load your game! It used to take 30 minutes and didn’t always work. Eventually they added pictures to things, and then more interaction.

Sound familiar? It was a similar development path with the World Wide Web in 1995 and generative AI now.
